To say that Joan Andersson’s upbringing was horrific is an understatement. She grew up in a cult known for exploiting children. She’s been impacted by substance abuse and domestic violence, been in custody, suffered mental illness and had her children taken from her.
Only an extraordinary person could respond with kindness and generosity after such heartbreak, she fundraised and refurbished The Canberra Hospital Fetal Medicine Unit Bereavement suite to ensure others receiving sad news can do so in a room of warmth and love.
They have the worst employment records you could imagine. Periods in prison or in refuges from domestic violence left gaps in the working pasts of a group of Canberra women - so potential employers spent less than a nano-second before pressing delete on their job applications.
Now THIS is a woman making a difference! MIX 106.3's Renee Bogatko caught up with Joan Andersson, who was named the 2019 Lifeline Canberra Woman of Spirit! The way she's turned her life around to help others is truly remarkable!
